Doug’s Glögg. Not only have I named this delicious, and very strong, drink after me. But I have even started making labels and handing it out around the holidays. Glögg is a heated mulled wine. It is a mixture of port wines, some Brandy, spices, and some sugar. When its a cold fall or winter night and you need something to warm you up, this drink truly delivers. I highly recommend you give it a try.
Ingredients:
- 4 handfuls almonds
- 4 handfuls raisins
- 4 half pieces orange peels
- 20 whole cloves
- 15 prunes
- 20 whole cardamom
- 4 short sticks cinnamon
- 1 gallon sweet port wine (3.75 L) (you can buy the cheap stuff, its OK, I promise)
- 3.5 cups sugar
- 2 cups brandy
Directions:
- Boil all of the spices for about 15 minutes in enough water to cover (about 2 cups)
- After 15 minutes add in the sugar and the wine and heat to the boiling point.
- Once it hits the boiling point turn off heat and add the brandy and stir.
- Now here is the fun part! Take a long match, or one of those long lighters, and set the top of the liquid on fire. Let it burn about 5 seconds then cover it to put out the fire you have created.
- Next just strain all of the liquid away from the spices and serve!
* I like to bottle my Glögg with some of the raisins and prunes, and a cinnamon stick per bottle. This stuff only gets better with time!
